Description

Overview

Taking on crypto clients is one thing. Building a practice that handles them well, stays compliant, charges appropriately, and protects itself when things get complicated is an entirely different discipline.

This session is aimed at practitioners who are ready to think strategically about their crypto offering. Moving beyond technical compliance, Jamie addresses the advisory, commercial and ethical dimensions of operating in this space: from onboarding and filing through to enquiry defence, tax planning, software limitations and the difficult conversations that come with complex clients.

Drawing on extensive casework and front-line experience of HMRC's evolving approach to cryptoassets, this is the session for accountants who want to be known for doing crypto well, not just doing it.

This session covers:

  • The Compliance Landscape in 2025 and Beyond: CARF, HMRC nudge letters and the direction of travel on investigations
  • Onboarding Crypto Clients: KYC, risk tiering, red flags and managing scope from day one
  • Common Filing Errors and the New CG1 Box: the most frequent mistakes in practice and how the new dedicated cryptoasset section on the self assessment return changes the picture
  • When Does Crypto Activity Become a Trade: badges of trade, sole trader considerations and how the nature of a client's activity determines their tax treatment
  • Tax Planning Strategies: loss harvesting, use of the CGT annual allowance and the timing of disposals
  • DeFi, Structuring Advice and Defensible Positions: how to advise clients where HMRC guidance is absent or untested
  • Limitations on Crypto Tax Software: what the tools can and cannot do, and where professional judgment must take over
  • HMRC Enquiry Defence: building a file that holds up, what to retain and why
  • CARF in Practice: what data is actually being exchanged, what triggers an enquiry and how to prepare clients
  • Joint Ownership, Beneficial Interest and Interspousal Transfers: HMRC's stance, what is and is not permitted, and how to handle shared portfolios in practice
  • Future-Proofing Your Practice: the regulation pipeline, Lending against your assets, and the role of AI in reconciliation
  • Considerations When Deciding to Take on a Case: the factors that should inform your decision before accepting a crypto client, including how complexity affects fee setting, the skill level required for different case types, and how to assess whether a case falls within your current competence and capacity
  • Ethics, Professional Risk and the Difficult Crypto Client: PII considerations, MLRO obligations where source of funds is unclear, managing a client who discloses something problematic mid-engagement, and knowing when to walk away

Who should attend: Accountants and tax practitioners who are building or scaling a crypto tax specialism and want to operate at an advisory level, handling complexity, managing risk, protecting their practice and delivering genuine strategic value to clients.
